After a ton of work on my part. My iPhone application that was created for the company is ready to go. Of course, there is a hold up. The app is ready, I’m ready, the target users are ready, the database and share point interface for administration of the data is ready, but the data in which the application is set to deliver is well…. NOT!

I am not sure if this is a normal occurrence in the development world, but after a company invests that much time, money, and effort into an app, one would think they would be pressuring me to get it done. My motivation is to get an app out into the store just so I can see if it passes Apples screening and most important, so I can finally say I have an iPhone app, and it is done. Especially for a resume situation!

When it finally hits the public, I will be sure to post it for all to see. After this, I will begin to look into creating applications for myself. I have a few ideas, only one of which seems mildly profitable. Any app I choose will require a lot of data management coding on my part. I still have no idea how to use SQLite within Xcode.

Recently the company I work for merged with a much larger one. We are still deep in the process of aligning our systems and processes with theirs. I have been assigned to my new team and management. So far I am very happy at the direction the have me going. It appears I will get to spend a lot more time on development projects and working with code. I certainly am not going to complain.

Not everyone is happy or can maintain a positive outlook on the situation. The new company has committed to keeping everyone and will even allow you to train into any other line of IT you prefer…company paid no less. Some people however, manage to still try and make everyone else miserable around them. The constant sounds of “Oh the sky is falling.” or ”We are so screwed.”, or best yet “It’s just a matter of time”. So far everything that was told to us would happen indeed…ha happened. No reason to believe otherwise.

A lot of $$$ have been spent to go out of their way to retain everyone they can. Coupled with that and the others who have jumped ship seemingly for no reason, have made it that much easier for us to stay. My stance is… in this economy, one should be happy they are still working. Those who are nervous and push it on others should start searching for something else. Their departure will be a stress reliever!

Any have experience with this?

I will be the first to admit that I know little about SQL Server. For the purposes of our application we developed here at the hospital. I know enough to get by and know what I want a DB to do for me. On that note, I am the last one who should be documenting the setup of a SQL database. I have been documenting what the Client and Admin applications have been doing in code. This has so far taken me months to do. I’d say at least 50 work hours so far have been spent on documentation that still is not finished. Plus as I update the code, then the documentation falls behind right away. Current documentation is important for disaster recovery and getting newcomer admins up to speed on what your code is doing.

It came time to document some of our SQL setup and code. Our application relies on a lot of Stored Procedures and other background by the database. The VB code for that actual apps took long enough. Now we have to keep this updated in some documentation.

Enter SQL Doc by Red Gate Software. Fellow co-worker and blogger, Jorge Segarra (SQLChicken), had this application in his arsenal that he had yet to try out. It was part of the Red Gate’s SQL Toolbelt. In the matter of 5 minutes, this software fully documented the setup of the entire database. It placed all 190 pages in a nice neat MS Word document complete with a table of contents.

Umm…Five minutes? Are we serious?!?!

Both of us just stood there for a minute and had to try to absorb the fact that the upcoming nightmare of documenting our database…was done. Not only was it documented, but it had everything we needed. Now as we make changes, we can redo the entire documentation and it will catch every change we make. Again, with just a few clicks and a few minutes. It left me wishing for a similar application to document my application code!

If you are a SQL Administrator, I highly recommend you look at SQL Doc and the rest of the software they have to offer. If I as a newcomer to the SQL environment had this much appreciation, I’m sure you will be even more so.

My son’s team won their championship game this last weekend. What more could a kid ask for. Well, how about having the Stanley Cup there for your post-came pictures and celebration. What are the odds of cup showing up at the same time? I stressed this fact to the kids that it is a unbelievable coincidence. It will never happen again. Unless they grow up to play for the Stanley Cup themselves!!!

Every league in every sport has them. You know, the guy that has no business playing in your league. Has to play down a level because they want to show off the skills they think they have. Some outright dominate, others hold back just enough but ensure the team wins. Maybe they just want to feel like a forgotton NHL star. Either way, they annoy many of the players who are trying to improve and are out there to just have fun playing an awesome sport.

This is my first season playing hockey. About a year ago I began learning how to skate. In November I started in the Beginner League (our division has 4 teams, Beginner Plus has 6) playing for Team Lowenbrau. After 6 games, there is one team (from here on referred to as “that” team) that has yet to give up a single goal all season. Yes, six shutouts in a row! Our team has come close to scoring on them in both games, but yet it has not happened. Against that team we lost 5-0 the first time, then 1-0 on the second try. We play them again this weekend.

They have two ringers that play defense on “that” team. Beginners are no match and they will get the puck at will. My dog would be a star goalie when those 2 are on the ice. They should at least be bumped up to a higher league. I understand having tough competition can be a good thing, but sometimes it can ruin the fun. I think the ringers should move up to Beginner Plus or even the D League or move out.

On top of that,as the other teams began to find ways to put up a fight, ”that” team responded back by resorting to dirty play. Even resulting in some fights with the last team they played. My team has agreed that we are there for fun and refuse to play dirty. We would rather lose every game and have a good time doing so. It’s sad because there are other new players to hockey that are learning that they need to play as dirty as possible to win.

Has anyone run into this issue? What did your league do in these cases?
